The Oakland Maritime Access, Sustainability, and Trade (O-MAST) coalition is a partnership of maritime, transportation, logistics, labor, and community stakeholders advocating for the long-term future of the Port of Oakland, the many blue-collar jobs located in and around the Port, and the larger waterfront community.
O-MAST seeks to bring together industry stakeholders in partnership with Port, City, and regional leaders to create a shared vision for the working waterfront’s future, and to grow its standing and success as a critical hub of the Oakland and greater Bay Area economy.
The mission of O-MAST is to lead a collaborative effort to help shape the future of the Port of Oakland and its surrounding area through advocating for:
Represent maritime stakeholders in discussions with the City of Oakland, Port of Oakland, Alameda County Transportation Commission, and other regional organizations concerning the allocation of funds for transportation, sustainability, and other infrastructure improvements at the port.
Ensure all proposed uses at the Port are compatible with maritime operations so that proposed uses respect the importance of industrial and waterfront operations.
Support the alignment of future local, regional, and state policies with port operations and logistics, and encourage agencies to collaborate with O-MAST on policy implementation.
Raise awareness among community and local leaders about the importance of Oakland’s working waterfront for jobs, local economic impact, and the region’s economic vitality.
Partner with the Port of Oakland in its efforts to be a leader in sustainability and green technology, including reducing carbon emissions, piloting green energy alternatives, conserving natural resources, and mitigating air quality impacts throughout the supply chain.
There are many stakeholders involved in navigating issues pertinent to the Port and adjacent industrial lands. The Port of Oakland is overseen by a Board of Commissioners, a seven-member panel of individuals nominated by the Mayor and appointed by City Council. Port Commissioners exercise exclusive control and management of the Port of Oakland.
Additionally, the Port of Oakland sits within Oakland City Council District 3, currently represented by Councilmember Carroll Fife.
Another important governing body is the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC), which aims to protect and enhance the San Francisco Bay and advance the Bay’s responsible, productive, and equitable uses.
Whether you’re looking to actively participate in shaping the Port of Oakland’s future or just looking to stay in the loop on maritime and industrial issues and initiatives in the area, the O-MAST coalition is right for you.
